Off A4, Derry Hill village, midway between Calne and Chippenham Capabilty Brown designed the beautiful park in which Bowood stands. The huge grounds include a lake, waterfall, cave, Doric temple and ample space for games and picnics. More formal gardens can be found in front of the stately home itself, which contains displays of furniture, art, costumes and family heirlooms. There is also a woodland garden of azaleas and rhododendrons (separate entrance off the A342) which is open for 6 wks during the flowering season (May and June). Bowood has a superb outdoor adventure playground for children under 12 with a life-size pirate ship, high level rope-walks, giant slides, shutes, trampolines and an indoor soft play palace for younger children.
