The birth of a baby must be registered by one of the parents within 42 days. A birth must be registered in the registration district where it occurred. If you are not married then this is the responsibility of the mother, but the father must attend if he wants his details included on the birth certificate. A short certificate is issued free at time of registration, while a full birth certificate, which includes the names and occupations of both parents, is available for a small fee.
