Burrington Coombe, near Churchill.
OS Map 172 Bristol and Bath.
Access: From A368 (Chruchill to Blagdon) take the B3134. Drive up the valley for nearly 2 miles to the plateau and there is a car-park on the left.
A great starting point on the Mendips for young children. Fantastic views, wonderful heathland vegetation (wild grassy meadows, heather, bracken, gorse, silver birch etc.) and wildlife. Whether it's a quiet picnic, a gentle stroll or a few miles with the back-pack, there are lots of options available. For picnics and short walks take the path at the back of the car-park (north, towards Bristol), up 10 yards of rocky path and onto grassy meadow. For longer walks, walk up the road 30 yards and take the track on the right (going south) onto Beacon Batch and head right towards the peak. Continue west through Black Down, into Rowberrow Warren, Dolebury Warren to the Ancient Hill Fort above Churchill then back along the ridge in the direction of the car-park. This is about a 7 mile circuit but can be shortened and there are other access points from Churchill and Shipham areas.
